Bohemian: ALL IN or with a WINK

HOW DO YOU STYLE BOHEMIAN?

There are a number of ways you can approach this eclectic look: You can go ALL IN, mixing any pattern, color, and texture you can think of. No more holding on. You can be more subtle by just adding a few eclectic touches to your room — think of it more as a nod to the bohemian style rather than the full meal deal.

With the right attention to detail and the colors you choose, Bohemian can look super chic. Often rooms with a quiet or neutral basic palette with a few wild patterns are absolutely gorgeous and look incredibly chic! Whichever route you choose, bohemian interiors are perfect for achieving that cozy and inviting feeling. If you look at the bohemian interior inspiration photos below, the only element they all have in common is that they all look inviting.

What is Bohemian especially not: sterile - perfection - interior is completely right - minimalistic - no color

What is Bohemian above all: relaxed - warm - comfortable - eclectic - lively - colorful

HOW CAN YOU ADD THE BOHO-CHIC ATMOSPHERE TO YOUR HOME?

1. A VARIETY OF TEXTURES

One thing the boho house never misses is texture. Adding texture to your room can be achieved in so many ways! Think of:

  • baskets

  • planters made of different types of materials

  • macrame tapestries

  • rugs made of natural fibres

  • colorful Persian or Turkish carpets wooden furniture

  • upholstery

  • even works of art and stacks of books are textural!

Hang a tapestry, grab some crazy pillows and stack them on your couch. In boho style, the saying is "more is more", so add a lot of things you love!

2. LAYERS OF RUGS

Layered rugs give you an extra opportunity to mix patterns and colors. It also adds even more texture to your room! Try to lay a vintage rug with a bright pattern over a jute rug made of natural fibers. Or low rugs that live within the same color family.

3. PATTERNS EVERYWHERE

As with adding a lot of texture, patterns are key in boho décor. If you feel lost, try to choose an overarching color palette and work within it. For example, violet and gold, or rust and navy, or scarlet and mandarin. Remember to also leave room for your eye to rest, otherwise it can become a visual overload.

So, if you have a large colorful rug, try to keep the basic décor fairly refined with just a hint of accent color that complements the great color statement of the carpet. The same would apply to hanging a tapestry that is a big burst of colors over your couch. Keep the sofa neutral and incorporate the same colours of the tapestry into the cushions.

4. PLANTS, PLANTS, PLANTS!

The more the better! Plants just give that effortless "jungle" natural atmosphere, and they're amazing! I can't recommend filling your house with live plants enough. They can help add a ton of visual interest to parts of your room that feel empty.

Cacti are especially popular in the jungle boho decor trend, so if you have access to some prickly friends, be sure to grab some! Serious people, plants = good vibes.

5. A GOOD MIX OF DIFFERENT LIGHT SOURCES

String lights, lanterns, funky chandeliers, candles. Use them all! I always go on and on about the importance of lighting, in any décor style, and thinking about your lighting when creating a boho space is no exception. You can mix and match what kind of light sources you like, but I find what works best for the boho look are pendants made of natural fibers.

6. LOW LEVEL SEATING

The boho philosophy revolves around sitting back, chilling and relaxing. Floor cushions, leather poufs, soft poufs and beanbag chairs, are all great low-level seating options to have, as they invite people to sit down and stay for a while.

7. DO NOT USE (TOO MUCH) BLACK

If you're looking for chic bohemian décor, try to stay away from large, black furniture or large furniture in super dark wood. Stick to light, bright woods.

Dark woods are quite heavy, while lightly bleached woods provide airiness and a clean background for the colors, patterns, and textures you add to your room.

If you choose this approach, you should still try to remember to add one or two dark elements to anchor your room.

8. ADD VINTAGE OR HANDMADE FURNITURE

I think it's possible to add a vintage piece to almost any décor style. But in this case of boho décor, second-hand furniture is really a MUST for the real boho look!

Whether it's a side table, a chair or a vintage tray, adding something old will bring character to your room. If your frugal find looks TOO rough at the edges, try brightening it up with some colorful paint!

9. SOMETHING PAINTED IN A BRIGHT COLOR

This could be a turquoise wall, a chair painted bright red in the corner, a beautiful cabinet painted lush tropical green – you name it! If the item is a little rough at the edges, even better! The bohemian look is far from sterile and perfect, in fact it thrives on those little imperfections that allow people to feel more relaxed and at ease in a space.
